Raquel Santos (Ph.D) 

Raquel Santos obtained a BA in Conservation from NOVA School of Sciences and Technology (Lisbon, Portugal) in 2008. In the same year she started an MA in Conservation in the same University, specializing in Textiles. During her Master’s, Santos studied a Portuguese group of Salting Carpets were she used an interdisciplinary approach to establish an important methodology of research in historical carpets.This study resulted in three communications for important international meetings: Dyes in History and Archaelogy 2010, ICOM and ICOC 2011. In 2011 she was awarded a PhD grant by Science and Technology Foundation (FCT).

Specialist in developing tools to support the study, preservation and appreciation of historical textiles.She obtained her PhD History in 2017 by developing an interdisciplinary approach to establish the production and consumption classical Islamic carpets. She was a conservation and curatorial fellow (2012-1016) at the F|S Galleries of Art, working in collaboration with The Textile Museum, The National Gallery of Art and the former Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington DC, USA). She has supported The White House and The Frick Collections’ (USA) and more recently the Rietberg Museum (Switzerland).

 

Currently, she is a researcher at Centre for Humanities - NOVA University of Lisbon (CHAM, NOVA/FCSH) and a co-founder and managing member of the project Textiles,Trade and Taste, Portugal and the World (TTT), and continues working to study, preserve and promote textile heritage, in particular, by focusing on translating complex topics into accessible information in the digital domain.
